ROTARY CLUB OF EDMONDS
BOARD OF DIRECTORS' MEETING MINUTES,  APRIL 16, 2003

Meeting called to order by Pres. Sally Hyde at 7:30 a.m.

Board members present were
       Sally Hyde, Bill Moran, Rudy Jones, Vern Chase, Staser Holcomb, Doug
       Purcell, Elizabeth Crouch, Alex Hopkins, Carl Swenson, Pat Thorpe

Guest present:    Kirk Greiner

Pres. Sally called for the minutes of the previous meeting.  SInce these were e-mailed, the Sec. did not reread them.  Vern moved Alex seconded they be approved
as e-mailed.  Motion passed.

The minutes of the Special Board meeting as published in the "Backwash" were
discussed.  A correction to the Senior Citizen section was that the Seniors do not
own the home referred to.  Carl moved the corrected minutes be approved.  Doug
seconded.  Motion passed.

Secretary reported that our March attendance percentage was 96.75%.

No Treasurer's Report

SERVICE CHAIRS:

Club Service - Elizabeth Crouch

We have the library Showcase available again from May 15 through May 31 that we
need to utilize. 

Centenial Project - No report

Carl asked that we make what we do available for view.

Community Service - Alex Hopkins

We have awarded all the money appropriated for this year.  The last meeting of the
committee is this Thursday to look at the process for next year .  We will also
consider the Auction for 2004.

International Service - Carl Swenson

Carl is trying to supply Pam with pictures for the album and has requested some
from Peru.  He has talked to BIll Morton about South Africa project.  The young man
from So. Africa is still working at Westgate Albertsons.  Carl has received a "thank
you" for our contribution to GSE.  He announced that he is the DIstrict Chairman of the District Foundation of Alumni for GSE.  The Sullana, Peru project has made a
leadership change.  The former president will still have a hand in the project.
Carl introduced the International Heifer Project which is independent from Rotary.
We may become involved in this in the future.

Vocational Service  -  Doug Purcell

Doug has started work on the employee project in the community.  Requests for nominations will go out by July l with awards in July or August.
Pat Shields has received a request for funding a 6th Grade Outdoor Event called
Camp Orcallow on Orcas Island.  Students will do fund raisers collectively to pay
their costs.

Foundation Report -  None

Membership Report - Two potential members were proposed by Vern Chase and
Bill Moran:
          John Richardson     Security Consultant with Sonitrol Pacific of Everett
           Corey Krueger        NexPost authorized Dealer of Seattle

Carl moved board approval for the presentation of the two potential members to the
Club members.  Elizabeth seconded.  Motion Approved.  The two member apps.
will be posted at the next member meetings

Waterfront Festival  -  Pat Thorpe

The layout of the festival is being changed which will move the Beer Garden and the
Family Entertainment stages.  No cover charge for the Beer Garden. 
Thursday night we can be open to families.  Kids under 10 are free.  The entrance
will be at the far end on Thursday night isolated from the Crafts section.  Yacht Club
members and Port Tenants get in free.
Home Depot will have a Craft Booth for Kids. 
J. P. Patches will be present.
We are trying to get more kids orientation at the festival.
Change in the advertising - $100 ad with the Jazz Festival.  We are asking the Daybreakers to volunteer at the festival.  We have Sea Scouts volunteering and we will have a 7:30 "Flair Up".

The Park and RIde lots will be at Edmonds Woodway High School and the Methodist
Church.  There will be 2 Pick Up points in downtown Edmonds.  We are hoping to add the old WHS at Westgate as a P & R lot.  We will be using small busses
which will come to the main gate.  The County Bookmobile will be there.

Advertising:  We will have free advertising    Advertising the Seattle TImes for two Sundays will cost $7,500.  BIll moved Doug seconded this advertising.  After much discussing, Carl Tabled the motion.

Pres. Sally would like to hear other options for advertising for this kind of money.  Vern requested information on the readership of the TImes, Herald and the P.I.

A guard for night time duty on the boardwalk area is needed.

Pres. Sally requested we have a Special Board meeting following this next Tuesday
club meeting at which time new information be presented regarding an advertising
program for the waterfront festival.
