Minutes of the Board of Directors meeting of September 15, 2004:

 

  In attendance were Kathy Dahlstrom, Vern Chase, Joan Longstaff, Pam Halsan, Larry Throndsen, Meena Swenson, Karen Wiggins, Mike Kealy, Rod Norman, Elizabeth Crouch, Carol Kinney, Mike Meeks, and Don Henderson. 

 

 Agenda was approved as provided with the addition of a discussion of the Art Walk for the next quarter and a discussion of the city entrance service club signs.  The minutes of the 07-21-2004 were approved.  Mike Meeks presented the balance sheet and the proposed budget for 2004-05.  Referring to the outstanding A/R, Elizabeth informed the board that she has sent letters to all members on leave of absence to determine what their desires are for continued membership.  Vern asked that there be a separate budget for the Centennial Project since it is probably going to extend beyond this fiscal year.  There was discussion of how to handle scholarships being funded out of the Edmonds Rotary Foundation rather than the general fund of the Rotary Club of Edmonds.  Mike Meeks indicated that he would revise the budget figures and email to all Board members.  It was moved by Mike Kealy, seconded by Don and passed that we would have a supplemental board meeting in two weeks after Mike Meeks has distributed a full copy to all board members. Centennial Project:  Vern Chase reported that ground breaking would probably occur at the end of 2004 or beginning of 2005.  They are working on PR, potential sponsor packets as well as moving ahead with contractor selection and permitting.  Some concerns as been expressed that since the Steve’s are only donating for 15 years, how we position donations to the project.  It was agreed that we need to have a clear message about the Steves’ plan and how it will work to the benefit of all.

 

Club Service: There was discussion about how to give Mike Kealy more help in providing content for the Backwash.  Pam reported that Pat Thorpe was providing speakers for October, Don Henderson for November, and Sally Hyde for December.  There was discussion about too many repeat messages from similar subject speakers.

 

Vocational Service:  Kathy Dahlstrom spoke with Michelle at  Edmonds School District about our participation in career fairs in the spring of 2005.  Kathy is going to go to a meeting next week. 

 

Community Service:  Rod Norman has rejected some requests for help from King County because he would like to keep it in the local area.

 

International Service:  Meena Swenson spoke of scholarships in Thailand and Kenya.  Elizabeth had a packet of scholarship application from Thailand.  Meena has volunteered to translate to English to allow review.

 

Membership Committee:  The following people were proposed for approval by the board.

All candidates were approved by the board.

 

Old Business

 

New Business:  Waterfront Festival was proposed by Karen to switch from weekend after Memorial Day to week before Memorial Day.  Rod moved and Larry seconded.  Motion passed.
