Our Club's History

 

1. Charter.

a. The club was chartered on May 2, 1951 and presented to the club on June 27th, 1951.

b. The club was sponsored by the Everett Rotary Club.

C. Current Articles of Incorporation.

2. Founders/Charter Members.

None of the charter members of the club are members any longer. However, their names are: Don Alexander, Harold Bucklin, Robert Carr, Roy Cooper, Birt De Mundren, Sam Ewing, John W. Goddard, Frank Kingdon, Dr. Lewis Krebs, Dr. Oscar W. Magnuson, J.W. Mathewson, Louie B. May, A.B. Miller, A.F. Morse, L.E. Neumayer, Arne Nielsen, Earl Richmond, Phillip M. Smart, Preston P. Steed, Eugene G. Stine, Juels M. Swenson, Jack Trafton, and Terry Ward.

3. Meaningful and Successful Projects.

a. In 1977 the club purchased the first paramedic van for south Snohomish County, providing the start-up for the paramedic program for the cities of Edmonds, Lynnwood, Mountlake Terrace, Brier, Woodway, and unincorporated areas.

b. In 1986 The Edmonds and Lynnwood Rotary clubs joined to raise the money to purchase a second paramedic van at a cost of more than double the cost of the first van. In order to avoid confusion with Medic-1 programs in Seattle and Bellevue, the program was named Medic -7.

c. In 1979-80 the Edmonds club built the bandstand in the Edmonds City Park. Every summer concerts are held on Sunday afternoons. The bandstand is also the site of other concerts and celebrations.

d. In 1988 the club purchased two ergonomic bicycles for use by paralyzed people. The computer-controlled cycles, with electronic sensors attach to the skin and stimulate the leg muscles of paralyzed individuals. The stimulated leg muscles pedal the cycle and the users cardio-vascular system gets a real workout. The program has been in continuous operation at the Providence General Medical Center in Everett for 10 years.

e. The club sponsored the Lynnwood Rotary Club and the Edmonds Daybreakers Rotary Club.

4. Examples of Rotary Service.

a. Harold "Babe" Bucklin, one of the charter members of the club, maintained perfect attendance from the first meeting until 46 years later when surgery ended his magnificent achievement.

b. The club has been the home club of three district governors:

i. John King, 1972-73. (When the club was in District 504)

ii. George Brent, 1994-95.

iii. Stan Dickison, 1997-98.
